Free applications everyone should have
There are millions of free and open source projects available, many of them better than any commercially available product. Below is a short listing of what we think is the best out there, broken down into ten categories.
Anti-virus and malware protection:Most PC users realize that they need some type of protection on their computer or may have an installed anti-virus program from their computer manufacturer. What most don't realize is that there are free programs that are just as good and in some cases better than the commercial products. Below are our recommendations

There are dozens of free and commercially available backup programs for computers. Unfortunately many of those backups are stored locally, meaning if your house were to catch fire, get robbed, or if you simply lost your backup discs all your data would be lost. Firefox 4 Beta 10 Available for Download
Mozilla released the latest Firefox 4 Beta Tuesday night. This release, beta 10, comes just 10 days after Firefox 4 Beta 9 hit the web.
The release notes for Firefox 4 Beta 10, as with Beta 9, are pretty sparse. Some changes have been made to make the browser more stable and Mac OS X users should have better Flash support.
As Mozilla nears the finish line with this release, it is asking users to provide as much feedback as possible. Mozilla says that it has received over one million pieces of feedback over the course of the Firefox 4 Beta, but having more data always helps.
Users can offer up their reports on what’s working and what isn’t by clicking the feedback button on the top right of the browser or going to this site.
In our brief tests, the Flash performance in Firefox 4 Beta 10 appears to have improved in Mac OS X. Video plays better and consumes fewer resources. Likewise, most of our add-ons and plugins were compatible with this release.
Still, we think Firefox has come a long way in the last few beta releases. The browser feels faster and more responsive, and some of the interface tweaks and add-on changes bode well for the future.

The iPhone version of this popular app zooms in on your location, then lets you pan around to see the world through Google goggles. Just don't expect to do any of it in a big hurry. Unlike the spry Google Earth on your computer, this version is maddeningly slow. Get it together, Google.

To find more, just tilt and swivel the phone to pan around the sky (or scroll around with your finger). Zoom in on a specific planet or star and the app will tell you how far away it is. Hint: really, really far.

Comodo firewall Pro
Continuing with some security related software, the turn has come to firewall software. As with antivirus programs, there are a number of commercial alternatives and several free alternatives. I used ZoneAlarm for a while, but about a year ago I started using Comodo Firewall Pro.
I feel that Comodo is a much less resource intensive program than ZoneAlarm. Furthermore, it seems to be better to detect programs using other programs to access the Internet.
